Bio-Inspired Polymer Membrane Surface Cleaning
To generate polyethersulfone membranes with a biocatalytically active surface, pancreatin was covalently immobilized. Pancreatin is a mixture of digestive enzymes such as protease, lipase, and amylase. The resulting membranes exhibit self-cleaning properties after “switching on” the respective enzyme by adjusting pH and temperature. Thus, the membrane surface can actively degrade a fouling laye...
متن کاملIonic diffusion through a bio-inspired membrane
1. Introduction One of the scientific challenges in nanofiltration is to develop nanofilters with both high ion permeability and selectivity, which are often considered as antagonist features. Today, the number of solid state membranes that are readily useable is limited and their performances, i.e. ion permeability and selectivity, are restricted. New materials for nanofiltration are thus clea...
متن کاملCarbonate hydroxyapatite functionalization: a comparative study towards (bio)molecules fixation.
Different methods for the functionalization of carbonate hydroxyapatite granules with free amine groups by reaction with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) have been compared in order to improve the potential for tethering of bioactive molecules to bioceramics. The combined use of tetraethoxyorthosilicate and APTES with acid catalysis resulted in an evident increase in amine surface grafting.
متن کاملPolypyrrole-supported membrane proteins for bio-inspired ion channels.
Biomedical platforms constructed by immobilizing membrane proteins in matrixes made of synthetic organic polymers is a challenge because the structure and function of these proteins are affected by environmental conditions. In this work, an operative composite that regulates the diffusion of alkali ions has been prepared by functionalizing a supporting matrix made of poly(N-methylpyrrole) (PNMP...
متن کاملBio-inspired Grammatical Inference
The field of Grammatical Inference was originally motivated by the problem of natural language acquisition. However, the formal models proposed within this field have left aside this linguistic motivation. In this paper, we propose to improve models and techniques used in Grammatical Inference by using ideas coming from linguistic studies. In that way, we try to give a new bio-inspiration to th...
